It's Opening Day! Day one of the 2015 WRMYC campaign began today at Painesville Park. The day started off slow, not too cold (compared to what we've seen the last few months!), but with a biting piercing chill in the air. The wind threatened to leave us in a drifter, with barely a ripple on the pond, but as the day progressed it picked up steadily, blowing up to 8-10, and mainly out of the NNE. This medium air coming from a direction that ran right along the pond made for some good sailing. The shifts were significantly more predictable than what normally occurs, which led to some good races! Thanks to Tom Schreiber for RD'ing today. We had 10 scoring boats on the water today, but with only 2 boats from the Gold fleet, large herds of angry boats were frequently seen at the start line, leading to more than one general recall. And a big welcome to Ron and Larry!
In the Gold Fleet, Mike Wyatt edged Al Daviso, 16-12, to take the win for the day. So Mike and Tom share the lead with 1 pt each, followed by Al with 2 pts. The rest of us gold fleet lucked out with only two racers showing up, leaving the rest of us with 3 pts each. (That's how we're scoring these right?)
In the Silver fleet, a lot of the newer sailors were able to show their stuff, especially impressing the East German judge, who usually is a low scorer. Larry Ward made an impressive start to his WRMYC career, only to be sidelined for half the races with technical issues. If he had continued on the pace he was setting for those races, he would have had a good shot at a podium finish! It was good to see Dave K back on the water in a boat that (usually) went where he wanted it to all day!
And since I don't have a list of names in front of me correlating to the Sail numbers, Here's the list of Sail numbers and their finishing positions!
Attached is the Excel spreadsheet. If you see any errors, let me know.
